Duck Soup Banglampoo Style
Breakfast is usually the usual. That is, doesn't one tend to eat pretty much eat the same thing every day? I would think yes, but when you travel to an exotic country, that changes, doesn't it? Still, if one stays at a particular guesthouse or hotel in, Nairobi let's say, I'd wager that the guest would quickly become accustomed to the same breakfast every day, even though that breakfast be vastly different than the one he or she is accustomed to back home.
Duck soup is an odd thing for breakfast, wouldn't you say? What's even odder is eating it in an alley sitting on crates with real live ducks in cages watching you not three meters away. This was in Banglampoo, Bangkok, Thailand, just off the infamous backpacker's mecca of Khao San Road. And, just to clarify the dish, it was actually duck soup with duck meat, vegetables, and noodles, and cost (at the time) fifty U.S. cents a bowl.
How did this become our breakfast for the next ten days? We literally stumbled into it on the way to the travel agency. To get there we had to maneuver through an alley full of food stalls. I looked up and saw a bunch of ducks. You like duck? a young man asked, Try, try! We liked duck, we were hungry, and we tried. It was great, and although I haven't had very much duck soup in my life this was definitely the best duck soup I had ever had.
From that day forth, before exploring Bangkok (or more likely shopping), we had our daily breakfast of duck soup with meat, vegetables, and noodles.

Sydney's Diverse Fine Dining Options
The broad scope of Sydney's restaurants, pubs and cafes is a mirror reflection of the city's status as a melting pot of cultural diversity. As one pundit put it, the choices are so wide and culturally varied that they read like an atlas. They range from local Australian cuisine to Italian, European, Asian, Japanese, Mediterranean and more.
Foreign visitors who want to sample traditional Australian fare should take a trip to Harry's Café de Wheels for the best meat pies in the city. The so-called bush-tucker, which features original aboriginal cuisine that includes kangaroo meat, is also available in select venues. Although the Australian government allowed restaurants to serve kangaroo meat starting only in 1993, bush-tucker meals have become a must-taste delight among many foreign visitors.
Since Sydney is a harbour city, seafood is a staple of most restaurants and is served exclusively by many of the leading dining places in town, including Fishface and Five Dock Seafoods Cafe. These places - and many others - always provide a fresh supply of barramundi, snapper, mussels, prawns, calamari and octopus, thanks to the nearby Sydney Fish Market. Of course, Sydney's king of seafoods is the popular Doyles Hotel, the oldest seafood restaurant in town. From its beachside location, Doyles also provides a breath-taking view of Watsons Bay.
The best Italian restaurants in Sydney are Gelbison and Mezzaluna, while some of the best pasta in the city can be found at Norton Street in the Leichhardt inner city, which is also known as Little Italy. There is a strong Italian influence on Sydney's fashionable café society as one can glean from the many cafes on Darlinghurst, Potts Point and Bondi Beach. The hippest spots in town also happen to serve the best coffee and these include Bills, Tropicana, Bar Coluzzi and La Buvette.
Aside from Italy, the Euro influence on cuisine is also evident in the very popular French restaurants Bistro Moncur and Sel et Poivre, while foreigners and locals alike regularly patronize such excellent fine dining venues such as the Greek restaurant Mykonos and the Spanish restaurant Capitan Torres. Meanwhile, the most sumptuous Eastern European cuisine can be sampled at Corner 75.
There are several excellent Asian restaurants that serve the best cuisine from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia and Iran. Among the outstanding Asian restaurants are The Malaya, Chinta Ria, Lebanon & Beyond and Blue Elephant.
If it's Japanese food that your heart desires, the most popular places for sushi, sashimi, noodles, tempura and teriyaki are Sushi Suma, Shimbashi, Dragonfly and Raw Bar.
If your plan is to go restaurant hopping in each district, here's a useful general guide that you can follow:
The suburbs in the West host several Cambodian and Turkish restaurants while the suburbs in the South host Greek and Lebanese restaurants. Suburbs in the north host Indian, African and Japanese restaurants while suburbs in the east host Indonesian and European restaurants.
If you want to enjoy a good view while dining, your best options are The Boathouse, Catalina and The Summit. The best vegetarian restaurants are Govinda's and Harvest. The trendiest culinary enclaves are Bayswater Brasserie Restaurant and Hugo's.

The Archetype Italian - Fact Or Fiction?
Italy, the perfect country to pass your summer vacation. And while we're there, we try to walk, talk and act like a real Italian. Because we all have these images in our head, prejudices about the Italian people. Do they really eat only pasta and pizza? Do all the people in Sicily belong to the Cosa Nostra? Time to separate fact from fiction and discover the true Italians!
They eat pasta two times a day, seven days a week. Fact, but that doesn't mean they eat spaghetti bolognaise every single day. Tagliatelli di mare, Macaroni with ham and cheese, penne all'arrabbiata, with more then 600 types of pasta and even more sauces the possibilities are endless. Besides, probably you eat boiled potatoes three times a week, in Japan they eat rice and in China noodles. It's exactly the same.
Italian men are the best lovers. This is a tough one. According to an international poll, only the Spanish and Brazilian men do better. We'd say fact, since second runner up is not bad at all. They are known to be very romantic, charming en they know the right tricks to seduce you. Does that make them unreliable? No more than any other men. Times have changed and so did the Italians. They used to be real heartbreakers, but the time when they chat up anything with legs and boobs is definitely over.
All Italians are trendy and fashionable. Fiction. All the business men wear the same style boring suit, and we assure you that most girls buy at H&M and Mango instead of Fendi and Prada. And the rumor that Italian men look gay, with diamond earrings, hair gel and curly chest hair? Fiction as well.
And last but not least: An Italian boy will always love his mother more then he loves you. Not only is this a fact, we have numbers to prove it. Most of then see their mother daily, and there's a good chance she still buys his underwear. Met a cute guy who is single and older then 35?
Bet you he still lives with his parents. Italian mama's are real mother hen's and very attached to their sons. 1 out of 3 divorces is said to be caused by an impossible mother-in-law. But once you've strengthened your position and have shown her that you are here to stay, she'll happily accept you and treat you as her own daughter.

Healthy Diets Of The World
As Americans and other Westerners grapple with obesity and weight issues, more and more attention is being paid to diets of other people in countries around the world that are enjoying good health and have few weight-related problems.
Research shows that there are a number of diets around the world which, when adhered to, show much lower incidences of heart disease, cancer and obesity. Let's take a look at some of them.
Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is a diet which is shared by people from countries on the border of the Mediterranean Basin including Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Monaco.
Research has shown that people who adhere to the Mediterranean Diet have a higher life expectancy and lower incidences of chronic diseases than people who live in other parts of the world. It's believed that one reason for this is the consumption of Olive Oil. Used extensively in cooking, Olive Oil takes the place of margarine and animal fats that are consumed in high quantities in countries like the United States and Britain.
Olive Oil has a very high content of monounsaturated fats and polyphenols.
Monounsaturated oils have been proven to lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol and cancer. A powerful antioxidant, polyphenols, is one of the main substances in Olive Oil. Polyphenols has been proven to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Additionally, the Mediterranean diet consists of lots of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruit, whole grains, seeds and nuts. Fish, which is high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, is eaten about 3 to 4 times per week in the Mediterranean diet. Research shows that Omega 3 fatty acids reduce the risk of heart disease and other degenerative conditions. And while grilled meat is eaten, red meat makes up a small part of their diet.
Japanese Diet
The Japanese diet has gained a lot of attention in recent years due to the long life span that Japanese people are know to have. Studies show that Japan has, on the average, about 20,000 people who are 100 years old or older. The secret to this longevity has been proven to be diet. One reason for this is because when Japanese people plan their meals, they plan with the nutritional value of their food in mind. Their main source of protein consists of oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon. All of these fish have been proven to have numerous benefits because of the high content of Omega Fatty Acids. Omega Fatty Acids are known to protect the heart and other organs from degenerative diseases such as cancer. They also maintain the health of the hormones, brains and eyes.
Several varieties of vegetables are also eaten everyday and it would not be unusual for a Japanese family to eat vegetables with their breakfast, lunch and dinner. A diet high in fiber exerts a protective influence over the digestive track and guards against colon cancer.
Additionally, Japanese people eat lots of noodles, however, the noodles they eat are often made from buckwheat flour which is known to facilitate the digestive process.
Oolong tea is also consumed at mealtime and is thought to have excellent health benefits. Oolong tea is said to help the body digest fats and, in Japan, is consumed when fried food is served with a meal. Served cold or hot, Oolong tea also helps with the digestion of food in the digestive track.
Diets From Other Countries
While the Japanese diet and the Mediterranean diet are two of the healthiest diets in the world, there are several others. Other cultures which have healthy diets include a number of African countries. One lesson that Westerners can learn from African diets is to add more nuts to our meals. In many African countries, nuts are often considered the main part of the meal. In fact, in some African countries, peanut stew is a favorite dish for many people. Cooked with lots of vegetables, a main dish made from nuts offers a wholesome, high-protein meal that is an excellent substitute for meat and poultry.
Another diet of note is that of South America. South Americans are known to eat lots of beans as one of their main staples. And in countries where a lot of meat is eaten such as in Argentina, many of their farm animals are grass fed. It is said that this is perhaps one of the main reasons that their rate of heart disease is much lower than that of North Americans in spite of the fact that they eat much more beef than other countries of the world.
Whichever diet you choose, the key factor is to choose a diet which is wholesome, nutritious and well-balanced. If you are looking for healthy diet alternatives, try adopting any of the diet alternatives mentioned in this article. Or, better yet, you may be interested in mixing and matching the best of all of the diets mentioned here.

Calamondin - Home and Culinary Uses of the Fruit
Calamondin, an indigenous citrus plant in Southeast Asia and China, is an important cash crop in the region. Otherwise known as kalamansi, its fruit is used in many of the Asian cuisines as a condiment or a flavor enhancer. In the United States and some of Europe, the plant, however, is used as an outstanding home ornamental - Usually displayed in patios or the living room.
The tree, which is often trained as a bonsai, will bloom with flowers year-round; filling the air with the aroma of citrus blossom. The tree has upright branches with very few thorns and can grow up to 10 feet. Its 3-inch evergreen leaves are broadly oval and pale green below like those of it cousin, the kumquat. Its flowers are white and small. The 1 3/4 inch-wide fruit is small, depressed and deep orange-yellow when ripe, loose-skinned and segmented. The pulp is very acidic to taste.
Fruits can be harvested any time of the year. It is said that it is an acid citrus, a group that includes lemons and limes. The flesh is orange, juicy and acid, with a fine lime-orange flavor. Because of this, it is usually classified with the limes. The small seeds are few, with characteristic green cotyledons.
One bite of this fruit can pucker your mouth. The fruit, when ripe, is very sour when first tasted. Subsequent tasted fruits make your mouth sweet. If the fruit is picked too soon, it is bitter to taste.
The following is a list of possible uses for the calamondin fruit, mostly culinary:
The calamondin fruit can be used as a flavor enhancer for soy sauce. Simply cut a calamondin fruit into two. Squeeze and add a tablespoon of Chinese soy sauce. This dip is very common in the Philippines as a condiment for grilled sea foods. Calamondin soy sauce dip can also be used as a dip for dimsum and dumplings.
In Asian countries, the fruit's juice, together with soy sauce can be used as a marinate sauce for fish, pork or even beef. It adds flavor and removes the strong fish odor.
It can be use as an ingredient for a dish. If you want to add a sour tangy flavor to your dish, you can add the juice of the calamondin.
Its juice can add flavor to Chinese food such as congee, beef and chicken noodle soup.
It can also be used with a sushi or sashimi dip. Just combine the juice and a tablespoon of Japanese soy sauce with horseradish.
Calamondin can also be used as a deodorant and whitening solution for your armpit. Simply cut into two, and then gently squeeze it while rubbing it into your armpit.
The juice can be used as a whitening solution and stain remover for your clothes. Some old native folks from the Philippines use calamondin as a stain remover. They rub it into the stained part of the clothes and scrub it with brush and detergent soap.
It can be used as a medication for your sore throat. Simply squeeze the juice extract of calamondin into your throat. Do this three times a day. It may feel painful for your throat but calamondin is enriched with vitamin c. So it helps fight the bacteria in your throat.
Mixed with sugar, it can be used as a beverage as opposed to lemonade. Very good for your cough and colds.

Making Soups and Stews in the Crockpot
Soups and stews make for delicious lunches and dinners any time of the year and when you use the crockpot to cook them, the flavors seem to blend together perfectly.
With just a few adjustments to cooking times and to the amount of liquids used, most recipes for soups and stew made on the stovetop can be converted for the crockpot. In general, you will have to cut the liquid or moisture used in a stovetop recipe in half when cooking in a crockpot.
Also, remember that when you are making dishes in the crockpot with noodles it is important to watch them carefully. Noodles can overcook easily becoming mushy and basically falling apart all throughout your soup or stew.
You will find that most recipes for soups and stews made in the crockpot call for adding the noodles 10 to 15 minutes before the end of the cook time. The exact time will also depend on the type of noodle and whether you are cooking on the high or low setting.
For soups and stews in the crockpot, try using different types of meats including various cuts of beef, poultry, and pork.
Ham cooks wonderfully in a slow cooker and can be combined with ingredients such as beans, cabbage, and potatoes. Pork chops and spare ribs fall off the bone effortlessly and are incredibly tender when cooked in the crockpot. Both can be served with potatoes, rice, and salad for a tasty meal.
Chicken and turkey are also ideal for soups made in a slow cooker. There is nothing quite like homemade chicken noodle soup and there are many delicious varieties of chicken soups to choose from including those with Asian, Mexican, and Southwestern themes, just to name a few.
To make a hearty stew in the crockpot use beef including less expensive cuts such as chuck roast or cubes of meat that are intended for stews.
How to Make Beef Barley Vegetable Soup in the Crockpot
What You Need
1-1/2 to 2 cups water (Add 1-1/2 cups first)
1-1/2 to 2 pounds of beef chuck roast or beef stew meat
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 cup frozen green beans
1 cup frozen corn
2 cans (28 ounces total) diced tomatoes, un-drained
2/3 cup pearl barley, uncooked
8 ounces tomato sauce
2 cans (28 ounces total) beef broth
How to Make It
Combine all of the ingredients in the order they are listed inside of a 3-5 quart crockpot.
With the lid in place, cook the soup on the low setting for 8 to 9 hours, or if you prefer, use the high setting for 4 to 5 hours. Stir only once halfway through the cooking time. Add the other half cup of water if necessary.
You will know that your beef barley vegetable soup is done when the barley, meat, and vegetables are all tender.
If you have a newer crockpot that may cook some foods faster, or you are not sure if the cooking times listed are accurate, check the soup at 7 hours when cooking on low or at 3-1/2 hours on the high setting.
About Asian Food and Cooking
Asian cooking can generally be classified into several categories on the basis of the regional styles of cooking and the people and culture of those regions. Some of the main categories of Asian food are East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Central Asian and Middle Eastern. In common usage however, Asian food (also referred to as Asian cuisine) primarily includes South and Southeast Asian cuisine. The main countries that constitute this region are India, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma etc.
Chinese food is generally considered to be East Asian food, even though China stretches from across mid-Asia to the Far East. Rice is the most important staple through most of China. In some regions however, noodles are preferred to rice. Most foods are prepared by mincing or cooking, and are cooked in a wok, using very little oil. Traditionally, there are eight main regional cuisines in China: Anhui, Cantonese, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Sichuan and Zhejiang. The three distinct regional cuisines however, are Shanghainese - characterized by hot and spicy chilly pepper flavoring, Cantonese - associated with flavorful meat and vegetable combinations, and Mandarin - associated with steamed noodle and bread dumplings.
Since Japan is an island nation, much of its food includes fish and fish-based ingredients. Rice and sliced, salted vegetables are staples in Japanese cooking. Soy products such as soya sauce, soya paste and tofu are also used in many Japanese preparations. Japanese cuisine also includes sushi, meats in teriyaki sauce, lightly battered and fried meat and fish, as well as shellfish called tempura. Japanese food is healthy, tasty and simple to cook. It is low-fat, low-cholesterol, and well-known for reducing heart-related diseases.
While different parts of India are known for their different cultural backgrounds, they are also known for their different flavors and cuisines. Vegetarian food includes khakra and dhokla from Gujarat, daal-baati-choorma from Rajasthan, the Kashmiri dum-aloo, as well as dosas and kesari bhaat from South India. Non-vegetarian delicacies, especially the tandoori kind, were especially devised for the Nawabs of India. The saffron-flavoured reshmi kebab, and the lime juice and garlic marinated fish tikka serve as delectable appetizers in combination with the yogurt-marinated chicken sheek kebab. Tandoori food is the perfect evidence of the richness of India's cultural diversity and royalty.
Asian recipes were casually shared among the womenfolk in Asia, who generally got together after a long day's work, to discuss the day's events. Many of these recipes were guarded as important family secrets and carefully passed down from one generation to another. Thai food is a blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Myanmar, Khmer, Laotian and to a lesser extent, Portuguese cuisines. It is a harmonious blend of indigenous spices. Malaysian cuisine consists of fish, seafood, vegetables and poultry, though beef is conspicuously absent. It is usually spicier than Chinese food. Indonesian cuisine is also known for its unique blend of sweet and sour spiciness. Asian cooking has enormous potential in modern times, as Asian food chains are springing up all over the world very rapidly, and are also enjoying immense popularity.

Feel Better With Chicken Noodle Soup in the Crockpot
Chicken noodle soup has been a favorite in families for countless generations. If someone has ever made the homemade treat for you when you were not feeling well then you know just how comforting it can be.
There is evidence that as early as the 12th century healers "prescribed" chicken broth to their sick patients. The broth was poured over pieces of bread, which were known as "sops" evolving into the word we use now, "soup." And today, we finally have evidence that ingredients in chicken soup do indeed help to relieve symptoms of the common cold and similar ailments.
Amino acids in chicken that are released during the cooking process are rather similar to the chemicals in medication prescribed to patients with serious chest colds and bronchitis. Carrots, a vegetable usually found in chicken noodle soup, are an excellent source of vitamins that help to fight off infection. Onions, another primary ingredient of the soup, contain antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory agents to help fight illness.
Recipe for Crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup
What You Need
3 large sized carrots
2 stalks of celery
1 medium sized onion
3 pound broiler or fryer chicken
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried basil
3 cups water
16 ounce package noodles, uncooked
How to Make It
Clean and peel the carrots and cut into slices or small chunks. Clean and cut the celery into small pieces. Peel and cut the onion into slices.
Add the carrots and celery to the bottom of a 5 quart crockpot and place the onion slices on top.
If you are using a whole chicken, clean and cut it into large pieces while removing excess fat and the skin. Put the chicken in the crockpot atop the vegetables and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and basil.
Add the 3 cups of water to the crockpot and cook covered on the high setting for one hour. Cook the soup on the low setting for an additional 6 to 8 hours, or until the chicken is done and the vegetables are tender. You can also cook your soup completely on the low setting for 8 to 10 hours.
After cooking time is complete, carefully remove the chicken from the crockpot and set aside.
Add the package of uncooked noodles to the chicken broth in the crockpot and cover and cook on the high setting for 15 minutes. Take care not to overcook the noodles as they will become too soft and mushy. You can also cook the noodles in a pot of boiling water on the stovetop before adding them to the crockpot.
As the noodles are cooking either in the crockpot or on the stove, remove the chicken from the bone and cut into pieces.
After the noodles are done cooking, put the pieces of chicken back into the crockpot and cover. Allow all of the ingredients to sit and warm in the crockpot before serving. If your soup needs more liquid, add some hot chicken broth made from bouillon cubes and allow to warm in the crockpot for 15 minutes before serving.

Best Way To Learn Japanese - A Tale Of Two Cities - Part I
Living in Japan is the best way to learn Japanese because you have the bonuses of having first hand experience of Japanese culture, the country and its people. But before you leave, you need to get your brain ready to take on Japanese and Japan. To lessen culture shock and fortify your acquisition of Japanese, it would be wise to learn to speak Japanese online simply because it is convenient and affordable. Plus the faster you can master the hiragana and katakana (two standard syllabaries that are used in the Japanese writing system), the faster you'll be able to grasp the reading and writing in the textbooks and hence jump start your learning.
Choosing a city depends on whether you're a city or a country person, or a bit of both. For those of you who enjoy the city and country life, Okazaki is the perfect city for you to learn Japanese fluently and experience Japan.
Okazaki is located in the eastern part of the Aichi Prefecture (district) in central Japan. It is about a 2-hour ride on the Shinkansen (bullet train) between both Tokyo and Osaka, and Kyoto and Mount Fuji. The main part of the city is bicycle friendly, and to the east are the many hills and the forests that cover them. Okazaki has milder overall temperatures compared to most of Japan, the spring and autumn months are the best times to visit. Also, Okazaki is not as populous as most other cities. The city has many outdoor recreation facilities and parks for the outdoor enthusiast. For those of you who are in need of more contemporary and urban stimulation, the city of Nagoya is only a 30-minute train ride away to the usual big city hustle, bustle, and exciting nightlife.
Okazaki is a prefect symbosis of the old and modern world, of the city and country. This enables you to experience traditional as well as contemporary Japan. Furthermore, despite its recent economic growth, Okazaki has being able to preserve its historical traditions and character. This is evident in the many famous shrines and temples such as the Takisan and Daijuji temples, and the renowned Okazaki Castle. The Okazaki castle was the birthplace of the famous Japanese military leader Tokugawa Iyeyasu. He was portrayed in James Clavell's novel Shogun based on historical figures and events of Japan in the 1600s. However, Okazaki is most famous for their fireworks. The city proudly showcases these fireworks with amazing firework displays during the three-day Summer Festival in August, which is attended by people nationwide.
Because Okazaki is smaller, it is cheaper to live in and accommodations that are close to the school/college are easier to find. In addition, Okazaki language colleges include free cultural workshops such as making arts with Washi (origami paper) and weekend excursions, such as trips to Kyoto, to visit and explore the old Imperial city. Or you could opt to plan your own excursions.
All work and no play make you a burned out student. So you should take advantage of using your free time to interact with the locals by:
· Checking out the Okazaki bars and restaurants that specialize in tempura or in fugu (blowfish)or udon and kishimen noodle dishes or the world famous Okazaki Hatcho miso soup that is known for its medicinal and health benefits.
· Checking out the Okazaki nightlife that offers many Karaoke bars and local Japanese lounges called izakaya where you can eat and drink.
Remember the best way to learn Japanese is in Japan. However, before you go you need to educate yourself with regards to its history, culture and etiquette, and at least learn basic Japanese. If you want the best of both worlds, then Okazaki is the ideal city to study Japanese. Okazaki offers you a chance to experience a truly Japanese experience without the often daunting "bigness" and fast-paced pulse of a "mega" city like Tokyo.

Oktoberfest is Coming! Time to Drink Up, Eat Heartily, and Study German
Oktoberfest will once again be held in Munich, Germany on September 20 to October 5 this year. It is a good idea to learn German to be able to pronounce the multitude of drinks and food offered on the sixteen days of the event.
Delicacies and Food
When you think of Oktoberfest, the many varieties of German sausages ("wurst" in the native language) are never far behind. More than the common frankfurter sausage, you will love the bockwurst (chicken, turkey, lamb, pork with parsley, chives, white pepper, paprika, and salt), knackwurst (beef or pork with fresh garlic), and the bratwurst (veal, beef, and/or pork). To avoid embarrassing yourself, study German to be able to eloquate the German monikers of these delicious sausages.
You will also have the chance to sample the numerous kinds of spatzle, or noodles, the perfect accompaniment to beer. Common ingredients for the noodles are various spices, flour, milk, eggs, and salt. You should definitely sample the kasespatzle - cheese noodles with fried onions. These are so delicious that learning German, if only to show your gratitude, is a must.
You can also try other German delicacies such as hendl (roasted chicken), sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), and Apfelpfannenkuchen (apple pancakes). As if these are not sufficient reasons to learn German, wait until you get to the beers.
It's All About the Alcohol
More than the costumes, music, and food, the Oktoberfest is known for its beers and wines. Be able to distinguish the various beers and wines in the 14 tents of the event by studying the German language.
You can opt for sekt, sparkling wine that is fizzier than most because of high carbon dioxide contents. Go for the Deutscher Sekt, or sekt formulated from Riesling and Pinot black grapes and gris for special events.
German wheat beer can get you intoxicated. There are numerous kinds, including the traditional and unfiltered Hefeweizen, Kristallweizen (crystal wheat), Dunkelweizen (dark wheat), and Weizenstarkbier (strong wheat beer), to mention some. Alcohol content is typically higher with darker wheat, and the names hint of the alcohol strength, so study German quickly so you will not confuse them.
Obviously, you cannot pass on the marzen (pale lager), an Oktoberfestbier brewed specially for the festival. Indeed, showcasing the numerous varieties of wines and beers is what the Oktoberfest is about. Why, there are about 15 wines offered in the Weinzelt tent alone!
Of course, to drink bacchanalian pleasures, dine on great food, meet new people, and appreciate Oktoberfest, you need not study German. Still, it will not hurt to learn German free to make yourself heard above the raucous party that the Oktoberfest is.
